At the KCC meeting on Thursday 16th October, Kent Lib Dems argued for continuing protection for the green lungs of Kent . The Government South East Plan proposes to sweep away the protection for these 'Strategic Gap' areas, where green fields stop suburbs of towns joining up. This is against the advice of their own expert panel of advisers.

Cameron's Dud Idea?

KCC Conservative Finance spokesman said last Thursday (16 October 2008) he had not been consulted by David Cameron before he announced his Big Idea of capping Council Tax for the first two years of a Conservative Government. Conservative Finance Cabinet Member Nick Chard said that KCC would have to cut over £80 million from its budget if Council Tax was not to go up next year, and that this would be "a difficult challenge" to achieve. Asked by Trudy if he thought David Cameron's idea was therefore practical, Mr Chard did not answer.

Trudy Dean Leader of the Lib Dem Group on Kent County Council has called for representatives of KCC treasury advisers Butlers to appear before the Council's Scrutiny Committee on October 22nd. Butlers advised KCC to invest £50 million for a fixed six month term in three Icelandic banks back in March this year. It is these banks which have gone into receivership leading to potentially high losses for the Council and its partners.

Government Failure On Kingsnorth

The government appear to be poised to agree to EON building a new coal fired powers station, without the facility for carbon capture. Leaked emails which were given to a national newspaper revealed that the secretary of state, John Hutton, will approve the proposals without requiring EON to commit to including carbon capture at the development.

Medway Lib Dems Oppose Kingsnorth Power Station

Despite the Medway Lib Dems arguing that there are a number of problems with the proposal, Medway Council decided not to object to plans for a coal fired power station at Kingsnorth. Both Lib Dem Councillors voted against the decision to raise no objections at the planning meeting.
