In response to a question raised in Council by Ian Chittenden, Kent County Councillor for Maidstone North East, Kent County Council say that advertising on lamp posts will not distract drivers or cause accidents.

ESSEX WASTE BARRED FROM KENT

LIB DEMS FIGHT FOR KENT'S GREEN LUNGS

At the KCC meeting on Thursday 16th October, Kent Lib Dems argued for continuing protection for the green lungs of Kent . The Government South East Plan proposes to sweep away the protection for these 'Strategic Gap' areas, where green fields stop suburbs of towns joining up. This is against the advice of their own expert panel of advisers.

Cameron's Dud Idea?

KCC Conservative Finance spokesman said last Thursday (16 October 2008) he had not been consulted by David Cameron before he announced his Big Idea of capping Council Tax for the first two years of a Conservative Government. Conservative Finance Cabinet Member Nick Chard said that KCC would have to cut over £80 million from its budget if Council Tax was not to go up next year, and that this would be "a difficult challenge" to achieve. Asked by Trudy if he thought David Cameron's idea was therefore practical, Mr Chard did not answer.

HAVE YOU COST US £50M?

Trudy Dean Leader of the Lib Dem Group on Kent County Council has called for representatives of KCC treasury advisers Butlers to appear before the Council's Scrutiny Committee on October 22nd. Butlers advised KCC to invest £50 million for a fixed six month term in three Icelandic banks back in March this year. It is these banks which have gone into receivership leading to potentially high losses for the Council and its partners.

"At a risk of saying I TOLD YOU SO" Dan Daley, Councillor for Maidstone Central today responded to the quite remarkable statements made by Councillor Ferrin (Cabinet Member for Environment & Waste) concerning the repeated breakdowns and operational failures of the Allington Incinerator. Mr Ferrin is quoted as saying what seemed a very wise decision a very long a very long time ago is a very stupid one today.

It is a national disgrace Gurkhas, Nepalese soldiers, who served in the British Army before 1997 are not being treated with the respect and honour they deserve. Denied full pension rights, denied the right to British Citizenship and facing deportation. Purna Gurung, 55 who served as a Gurkha in the British Army for 15 years (1971 - 1986) is to be deported.

KCC Members have asked officers to think again about the closure of the QEF Bridge Court Centre for people with a physically disability. This followed action by Liberal Democrat spokesman for Adult Services George Koowaree who called in the decision to close the centre for further discussion by KCCs Cabinet Scrutiny Committee.

She has criticised KCC's refusal to answer Freedom of Information questions about the activities of these companies, and asked for details of any 'hidden' deals which might cut private businesses out of the loop.

Government Failure On Kingsnorth

The government appear to be poised to agree to EON building a new coal fired powers station, without the facility for carbon capture. Leaked emails which were given to a national newspaper revealed that the secretary of state, John Hutton, will approve the proposals without requiring EON to commit to including carbon capture at the development.

Medway Lib Dems Oppose Kingsnorth Power Station

Despite the Medway Lib Dems arguing that there are a number of problems with the proposal, Medway Council decided not to object to plans for a coal fired power station at Kingsnorth. Both Lib Dem Councillors voted against the decision to raise no objections at the planning meeting.
